Playoffs!

If you are privileged to be a spectator of Midget Football this season, you saw some great football. I have written in past issues about my feelings for this high quality gridiron product. It was always hard to forecast who was going to come out on top and the playoffs coming up will be just as tough to predict.
No matter how you slice it, Calgary Midget Footballs' second season should be a beautiful thing to watch.
On Tuesday, the sometimes high-scoring Colts square off against the stingy Northern Raiders. Expect a classic battle of good offence against tough defence. The Northern Raiders defence has been in tough all year long and their offence has improved steadily. The Colts have proven they are capable of breaking a game wide open and they always come out tough on defence in the playoffs.
Tuesday's other tilt will feature the Lions versus the Wildcats. The Lions aren't physically big but their defence plays large when it counts and amassing 47 points against the Broncos displayed some real offensive firepower. Oh, and did I mention the Wildcats played really well against the mighty Bulldogs in what I think was the best game of the year. They have strength in all three facets of the game.
One of the Wednesday matchups will pit the Cowboys against the Stampeders. The Stampeders are ready to move to the next level as the young franchise aspires to its first playoff victory. With a couple of plays in their favour they just may be able to do it. They just need that little extra push to set a team record.
And how about them Cowboys? All year long they played well enough to deserve to win, even if they were on the short end of the stick. Don't count them out.
Wednesdays' other game will showcase the talents of the Falcons and the Mavericks. In my opinion, the Falcons as a team were better than their record and I predict they will do better in these playoffs. They have the skilled players to get the job done. They are going to have to do that job against the Mavericks, whose record also fell short of their potential. This should be a good match between two teams who always play with lots of heart.
Sadly, someone has to sit out the playoffs and the Broncos came up a wee bit short this year. I found them exciting to watch, witness their last minute drive to beat the Stampeders and their come from behind tie against the Mavericks.
So buckle your seat belts ladies and gents, boys and girls. There is some fine Midget Football left to watch in this spring of 2010. Onward and Upward!
